Thaipusam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thaipusam (Tamil: தைப்பூசம்) (or Thai Poosam Kavady) is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

This is the first time I went to take pictures at Thaipusam celebration at Batu Caves. I just don't know what to expect.

I went out quite late from home at around 9:20am. Had to get the camera from my lil bro at Cyberjaya first. Went to breakfast at McD KL Sentral at 10 before taking the komuter to Sentul. From Sentul I took the special carter train to Batu Caves, RM2.20 per trip. It's been a very long time since I last rode a diesel train. Last time was when I was studying in Taiping. Sure bring back memories. One of these days I want to travel by train across Peninsula Malaysia.

Ok here are my favourite picks of the shoot.

Cidade de Deus / City of God...

A Brazilian film...To summarize...it's "GTA:Rio"...guns, violence, sex, drugs and bad language...LOTS of them...

If you're kind of viewer who doesn't easily feel offended by the "mature" content of this film, it is a real treat...probably one of the best film you'll see...

Why I like this film:

1) The non-linear style of story-telling - I really like this kind of story telling where each character has his own story chapter...You can see the character development more clearly and get connected with the characters at a more "personal" level...

2) Storyline - People are intrigued by stories of transformation...The film spans across 20 years of the lives of the characters living in the City of God, Rio...The story of human en devour, the story of life and crime of the people and the dark side of human nature...Powerful and authentic...yet funny and entertaining in certain parts...

3) Acting - The real strength of the film is in the acting. The drama is intense right from the start. Very convincing, natural and has that slice of life kind of feel you can't get from Hollywood film despite the fact that the actors are, if not all, mostly, first timers.

3) Cinematography - The hand-held feel on most parts of the film gives it a documentary POV...Lots of creative camera works...and some of the scenes are so intense, unforgettable...

What this film is about:
- the lives of young men living and growing up in City of God, Rio
-gangster/thug life/drama
-gangland war

The narrator is one of the characters in the film. He retold each character stories, the gang war and also how he got to be a photojournalist. The film was based on a true story and supposedly the story of one photographer named Wilson Rodrigues. You can find a lot of information on Rio gang wars but information on the latter remained elusive.

My Fave Pics of 2007

Dah setahun aku melibatkan diri dalam digital photography menggunakan DSLR...Dalam setahun tu banyak yang aku belajar...Dan dalam setahun tu aku tahu "photography vision" macam mana yang aku mahu tonjolkan...

Bagi yg baru nak berjinak dgn photography ni, the best way utk improve is to know your gear, know it's strengths, know it's limitations, work around it if you must...Lama-lama nanti, you and your gear will achieve something they call in World of Warcraft (I'm not a WoW player, my lil brother is), "Soul-Bind"...

Check Reuters, AFP, Corbis, Getty Images n notable photographers photoblogs...Look into paintings, cinematography...Read books (monographs, biography, art criticism)...those are some of the things I did to improve my photography...

I'm still green and want to explore more...My hope for 2008...Have 200 good images in my personal photofolio by year end... n___n

1 year already...time flies when you're having fun...

It has been a year since I started picking up digital photography and left my "burnt out passion" - character design and animation. These days, there are more people knew me through photography than character design and animation.

What paintings and drawings to Henri Cartier-Bresson, is what I felt for character design and animation. It was a lost reason. I find it absurd to redesign/substitute/fabricate reality with idealism and stylization. The world as it is has more to be seen, explored and understood. Why bother creating "new" worlds and wreck havoc to our minds with false symbols.

This was my last piece of artwork I did before slowly picking up photography again. It was done during my internship at CADC-MDEC. I had a blast creating this character. From the design, the modeling, the shading, the lighting and the rendering. Created using 3dsmax and rendered using Brazil r/s. The final image was rendered in A3 size 300dpi using the render farm at CADC. The work, from concept to rendering took 3 days only. The major bulk of the time was used for shader testings and test renders. The rendering only took 2 hours over 8 PCs instead of 15 hours on a single dual-processor workstation.

When the year ends, I'll have to hang my camera for a while. I have to settle some unfinished business first. Thanks to my visitors and fellow amateur photogs who knew me through my photography. 2007 was a good year, I gained a lot of photography knowledge through sharing and meeting fellow photographers.

I'll post up my top 10 favourite shots of 2007 in my upcoming post. Till then, later....
