CC Malaysia Photography Workshop

Thanks MDEC and Lensa Malaysia for organizing this event...Had loads of fun today...Learn lots of new stuff and inspiration from John Ishii...Fun shooting around Cyberview Lodge...Meet lots of cool people...Enjoyed great food...And on top of that I got 3rd prize photo at the end of the day among 100+ participants... n___n v

Tried my hands and eyes on nature photography...something I haven't explored much before...

The 3rd prize pic..."This picture has the WOW factor." - John Ishii

My Windows, Photoshop, Lightroom, printer...color profiles are all messed up...I really need to learn color management...

Plus points:
Improved framing/croping than previous albums.
Well propotions.
Good color tones.

Could have been better if u reduce expossure value by something like -o.33EV to -o.67EV for better hi-lite details.

Overall:
Excellent

Shots of KL

Yesterday I went to Adobe CS3 Launch at Shangri-La Hotel KL. As usual, I woke up early, to catch the morning bus to KL from Terminal Kajang. RapidKL are using new buses for the express routes, the ones with the coach-type seats. Very comfy. Grab 3 karipaps for RM1 from a hawker near KL Monorail for a quick breakfast. I was running late for the launch but I spend about 10 minutes to snap some photos around Brickfields using just the old Zuiko 50mm OM lens.

The launch was great and fun. But I only stayed there until the lunch break. Later went to Borders BTS to preview my next month book purchase since I hv quite an expenditure this month (bought the ME-1 eyepiece to replace the lost EP-5 eyepiece).

RapidKL buses changed some of their routes starting 21 April. I no longer can take the E2 bus from KL Sentral to Kajang. I have to go to Sultan Mohd Bus Station near Central Market for it. Which I think a bad idea, since the traffic in that area are the most congested in KL.

I've grown to love using this one lens. The images are not as "detached" like that of a telephoto lens and not as "distorted" as a wide lens'.

Loading the images may take quite a bit of time.

that's correct...all the photos above were shot using just the Zuiko 50mm 1.2 OM lens...I really like the fact the lens is very compact, fast aperture and the full manual control...it's more fun using minimal and compact gear...I'm dreaming of getting the new e-410... n___n ...trying to emulate photography by Leica masters like Henri Cartier Bresson using an Olympus camera... Kuala Lumpur...

Today I went to KLCC to Petronas Gallery for the 50 Years Photojournalism in Malaysia and Tokitsumugi Kinetic Sculptures Exhibitions...

Of all the photographs shown in the exhibition I particularly love 3 images...

1)The Independence Day proclamation by TAR at Stadium Merdeka...
2)Tun Mahathir's first day in office as PM...
3) UM students protesting to something and watched by some English dude (a Governor I think) passing by them... n___n; (sorry for my poor memory)

It's amazing to see how timeless photographs are...it captures the essence of time and have a story to tell...All the photos shown are very narrative, objective and timeless...I can't help to wonder who are these wonderful photographers that were only listed as "Jurugambar: Tidak diketahui"...

The Tokisumugi exhibition is something worth checking out...I was captivated by the organic movements of these mechanical creations...the artist Masato Tanaka also uses creative lighting and shadow play to make the sculpture move surrealistically organic...I absolutely love the sculpture "Connecting The Sounds of Stars Twinkling - 1991"...The sense of rhythm, weight and soft swaying movement is just amazing...I was mesmerized by this one particular sculpture...

You guys should check out these cool exhibitions if you have time...

I was planning to go to PCFair but change my mind...I went straight home instead...but took a detour to Petaling Street and shoot a couple of street photography using an antique Tokina 200mm OM lens with Olympus E-500...all ISO400, f5.6, 1/400 and above...

The long way home...

Like your page, Azim.
The 'penjual kopiah' photo really caught my eye.
Has that classic travelling photojournalist feel.

KLIA

8pm - Dah lama tak gi KLIA ni. Went to welcome my aunt Su and her family from Australia kat KLIA...the lighting condition is not suitable for tele kit lens so I just use normal kit lens as well as boosting the ISO. I got carried away trying to shoot MAS stewardess on the move carrying their luggages that I split up with my other family members. Tersesat so try cari diorang, last-last jumpa kat arrival hall. Tak banyak amik gambar mostly just family photos je. Nnt ada peluang akan dtg lagi utk location and people photography.

On the way back I asked my Uncle Faiz, "What do you miss the most about Malaysia?" He said, "The slower pace of life and free time...In Aussie you have to work extra hard and things go around at a much faster pace...". He also misses the Malaysian breakfast, roti canai telur and nescafe tarik. My uncle is Scottish.

Percubaan lensa seni...

Using old Zuiko OM 50mm 1.2...Still trying to get the manual focussing thing down right...

i'm using f2 for the above pics...f1.2 causes diffuse glows in some situation and the image is not as sharp...will try again as you recommended...thanks maitani...isn't that the name of a famous olympus designer? n____n v Wed 4-Apr-2007 22:09
Posted by:Azim Wan  - [Link]
Yes, Mr Yoshihisa Maitani was a genius and the chief camera designer and managing director of Olympus Optical Co Ltd. He developed a number of legendary cameras during his career. These include the Pen series, the OM series, the XA series, the IS series and the [mju:] series of cameras.

In early 70's he revolutionised SLR design. Before that all SLR were big, bulky, heavy, noisy and UGLY. It was Maitani@Olympus who innovate modern SLR, not other marque. Long live Olympus.

" Nice one, but u must always remember that when using OM system lenses on E series camera NEVER use maximum aperture before clicking shutter! Of coz u can use full aperture during composition and focussing. The BEST aperture is 3- f-stop from max f-no. In ur case [50mm f1.2] set ur aperture @ f 4. Try again , I can guarantee u will get better results."

Best aperture for what? If best aperture/f-stop for sharpness, then maybe the 2-3 stops higher rule-of-thumb will hold true. For me and my OM 50mm f/1.8, my 'best' aperture is the optimum compromise between the sharpness, chromatic abberation, and shutter speed and it's f/2.x (somewhere between f/1.8 and f/2.8 -can't tell exactly what f-stop). That's about 0.5 stops higher. Need to experiment will lenses. Some are already sharp wide-open, like the newer Zuiko Digital macros.

Nice shots. Ur pictures have value, not like those ordinary "lelly...1..2..3 " or "say cheers.." kinda of snap shots. Keep up with ur good work. Mon 2-Apr-2007 00:24
